Encouraging news from Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL). It sounds as if he’s finally ready to hold state-run schools and nonprofit colleges accountable for student performance:
“You cannot come to Congress to ask for more funding for Pell Grants while looking the other way as billions of dollars of our current investment is wasted,” said Sen. Durbin. “I’m not talking only about low-performing for-profit colleges. There are public colleges and private nonprofit colleges that are also failing students.”
Could it be that Sen. Durbin is starting to recognize the double standard between state-run schools and the private sector? We hope so. It’s a necessary first step in developing standards and regulations that truly protect students across the board.
